Beck’s from Germany

ドイツ北部のブレーメンのビールです。ブレーメンはドイツで初めて醸造業者のギルドが組織された（1489年）ところで有名です。このベックスは約90か国に輸出販売されているドイツでも有名なビールで、2002年2月まで個人経営でしたが、今は最大手Interbrew社の傘下です。

Beck's Brewery, also known as Brauerei Beck & Co., is a German brewery in Bremen and is the world's best selling German beer and sold in nearly 90 countries. Owned by local families until february 2002, it was then sold to Interbrew. The brewery was formed under the name Kaiserbrauerei Becj & May o. H.G. in 1874 by Lueder Rutenberg, Heinrich Beck and Thomas May. Thomas May left the brewery which became known as Kaiserbrauerei Beck & Co. in 1875.

DAB Original from Germany

ドルトムント地方で造られる淡色ビールを総称してドルトムンダーといいますが、輸出ビールとしても活躍したので、エキスポートビールとも呼ばれます。ミュンヘンタイプの淡色ビール（へレス）よりドライで、ピルスナータイプほどホップの苦みがないです。DABはそのドルトムンダーの代表格です。

A Dortmunder Export is drier than a Munich Helles, but less hoppy and bitter than a Northern Pilsner. It is burnished gold in colour and is not fully attenuated.

直訳すると”大麻の力”ビールです（ウコンじゃないんだから・・・）。有機栽培の大麻を副原料にしたドイツ原産ビール。THC（テトラヒドロカンビノール）含有量は0.2％以下ですので、お咎めなしなんでしょうが・・・。アルコール度数が8%と高めですので、飲みすぎるとこちらでハイになるかもしれませんね。

EKU 28 from Germany

ドイツ国内ではEKU 28ではなく、Kulminator 28と表記されています。ドイツビール愛好家にとって、EKUとは一種の畏敬の念を抱いて話されるようです。EKUはErste　Kulmbach Unionbrauereiの略で、（アルコール度数の高いボックビールといえばフランコニア地方の町である）クルムバッハで一番の（この醸造所を作った、元は二つだった）結合した醸造所といった意味です。そのEKUの中でもEKU 28は最も有名なビールで、クルミナトール・ウルタイプ・ヘル（＝クルムバッハのオリジナル淡色ビール）という言い表し方もされます。ヘル（＝ドイツ語で淡い）とありますが、淡色ビールではなく、琥珀色のビールです。

The most famous Double Bock beers to drinkers outside Germany come from the EKU Brewery in Kulmbach. The letters stand for Erste Kulmbach Unionbrauerei: Erste means First and Union indicates a merger of two former breweries in 1872. EKU 28 is the most famous beer of the brewery and it is called as Kulminator Urtype Helles. Although it is described "Helles", it is not pale type but further deeper colour such as Amber colour type beer.

Erdinger Weißbier from Germany

最も歴史ある白ビールがシュナイダーなら、最も販売量が大きい白ビール会社がここ、エルディンガーです。3万キロリットル/年生産のシュナイダーに対し、20万キロリットル/年です。ところで、ドイツではWeissebierやWeißbierを白ビール（White beer）、Weizenbier小麦ビール（Wheat beer）と表記ありますが、ともに小麦を材料にした上面発酵のビールを指します。

白ビールの元祖を自負するビールです。白ビールの泰斗で、このビールのレシピを作ったゲオルグ・シュナイダー1世は白ビール評論家から崇められるほどです。200年ほど前まで、白ビールはババリア地方王家の醸造所のみで作られていたものでしたが、ルドウィッヒ2世が売上の低迷を理由に止めてしまい、その専売権をジョージ・シュナイダー1世に売却してしまいます。以来、白ビールを作り続けますが、1927年、今の場所であるケルハイムに移り、現在に至ります。1607年にババリア地方の白ビールとして誕生して以来、シュナイダーは最も古い白ビールの醸造所として、現在も続いています。

The history of wheat beer is also the history of the Schneider brewing family and famous Schneider Weisse. Georg I Schneider, as the wheat beer pioneer and creator of the Schneider Weisse Original recipe (which is still used today), is revered by all wheat beer connoisseurs. 200 years ago, wheat beer could only be brewed by the Bavarian royal family in their breweries. In 1872, KIng Ludwig II discontinued brewing wheat beer due to a steady decline in sales. That same year, he sold Gerog I Shneider the exclusive right to brew wheat beer. Today, Gerog VI Schneider is running the brewery in Kelheim, which the family acquired in 1927 and has remained the Schneider Weisse brewery to this day. It is the oldest wheat beer brewery in Bavaria; wheat beer has been brewed there without interruption since its founding in the year 1607.

Weihenstephaner from Germany

ヴァイエンシュテファンは”神聖なるステファン（キリスト教最初の殉職者）”の意。この名称は醸造所のある丘陵地帯一帯を指したり、醸造所そのものを指したり、ミュンヘン工科大学醸造学科の俗称であったり、ややこしいです。ともあれ、このビールは、ミュンヘンの郊外フライジングにある世界で最も古い醸造所（バイエルン州立醸造所）で、724年にアイルランドのベネディクト修道僧によって僧院が建立され、1040年に醸造開始しました。修道僧の活動資金として販売も許可されていたようですが、当初は自家用に醸造していたようです。

The world-famous brewery of Weihenstephan at Freising in the Munich suburbs is the oldest brewery in the world. The monastery of Weihenstephan (Holy Stephan, the first Christian martyr) was hounded in 724 by Irish Benedictine monk. The monastery was built on a hill, which allowed beer to mature in deep cellars. The monks were brewing by 1040, when they were granted the right to sell beers to aid their work in the community, but they were probably making beer for their own consumption earlier than this date.

Hofbräu Schwarze Weisse from Germany

ババリアの公爵、ウィルヘルム5世はその当時のミュンヘンのビールに得心せず、ドイツ北部で古くからのビール産地アインベックより取り寄せていました。しかし、そのコストは馬鹿にならず、道中、随行メンバーに善後策提案を命じました。そして、1589年9月27日、侍従とカウンセラーが醸造所設立を提案しました。その提案を気にいった公爵は、即日、ガイゼンフェルド僧院のビアマイスターを招聘し、ホフブラウハウス（公爵のビール醸造所）を立ち上げ、そこの初代責任者に任命したのが始まりです。

Wilhelm V, the Duke of Bavaria (1579-1597), had a thirsty and demanding household. They were dissatisfied with the beer brewed in Munich, and so beer had to be imported from the town of Einbeck in Lower Saxony. Whilhelm ordered his retinue to think of ways of reconciling cost and pleasure, and on September 27, 1589, his chamberlain and counsellors submitted a suggestion to build brewery. Whilhelm was delighted with the idea and on the very same day recruited the brewmaster of Geisenfeld Monastery to plan and supervise the construction of Hofbräuhaus (the "ducal brewery") and to be its first master brewer.

Paulaner from Germany

ミュンヘンを代表するブランドの一つです。その名（パウラナー）は、イタリアの聖フランシスコ修道士の一派でミュンヘンに駐在する修道士に由来します。修道僧達が1634年から自家用にビールを作ったのが始まりです。祝日のみに販売が許されたビールはボックスタイルで巷で評判になりました。18世紀後半より商業化され、19世紀初頭にサルバトール（聖なる父のビールという意）ブランドを立ち上げました。よって、画像3番目のパウラナー・サルバトールはドッペルボックビールです。

The name of the Paulaner Brewery refers to the order of friars that resided in Munich who were part of the order of Saint Francis of Paula. The monks had brewed beer for their own use since 1634. The beer that was permitted to be sold on holidays was Bock style which gained local fame. Beer from the monks' brewery was sold comme4rcially from 18th century, and early in 19th century, a brewer named Franz-Xaver Zacherl began to develop the Salvator brand. Salvator means "Holy Father Beer".

Ur-Krostitzer Feinherbes Pilsner from Germany

旧東ドイツのライプチヒ北東部の町にあるビールです。ホップの苦みが効いたビールで印象良し。ラベルに描かれているおじさんはグスタフ　アドルフ2世で北のライオンと呼ばれたスウェーデンの王様です。なぜ、ドイツのビールにスウェーデンの王様が？？？と思いますが、この方は、かつて17世紀にあった30年戦争で、現在のポーランドと北ドイツを征服・統治した王様だからのようです。

It is from Krostitz where is north east of Leipzig, in ex-East Germany. The depicted guy is Gustav II Adolf of Swedish King, who was called "Lion of the North" and conquered much of what is today Poland and Northern Germant in the early phase of the Thirty Year's War (1618-1648).

Franziskaner from Germany

ミュンヘンの小麦を原料とした白ビール（Weissebier）です。Hefeとはドイツ語で酵母の意で、酵母入りのビール。よって、濁っており、瓶内発酵が進んでいるので、開栓した時の泡吹きがすごい。一方で、Kristall Klarは酵母を除去したもので透明感あるビールです。マグカップを掲げた修道僧のラベルがトレードマークで、日本でも見られるビールです。現在、大手Spatenの傘下ですが、Spaten生産量の半分がこのブランドです。元々の醸造所はヨセフ・セドルマイヤー（Josef Sedlmayr）によって買収され、彼の兄弟が所有するガブリエルズ　プラントと合併してできたミュンヘンで最古の醸造所です。

Talking Franziskaner Beer, it is the most famous white beer brand in Munich. "Hefe" means yeast in German. Therefore Hefe-Weissebier has plenty of foam when the bottle is opened. The bottle label showing a cheerful monk holding a mug of beer. The original wheat beer brewery, bought by Josef Sedlmayr and merged with his brother Gabriel's plant, was the oldest in Munich and was next to a Franciscan monastery.

ミュンヘンより車で45分ほど、ドイツ南部バイエルン地方の修道院ビールです。Klosterとはドイツ語で修道院の意。創業が1455年とありますので、ベルギーのアビイ（修道院）ビール（Abbey Bier）同様、当時、中世ヨーロッパで、旅する修道僧を迎え入れ、パン（キリストの肉）とビール（飲むパン）を施したのが起源と思われます。現在は、レストランも併設され、この地方の料理がドッペルボックビールとともにサーブされています。

Rothaus Pils Tannenzäpfle from Germany

ピルスナーとは元々チェコビールのスタイルの一つですが、黒い森の標高1,000mの非常に澄んだきれいな水で醸造したのか、”ドイツの”ピルスナータイプです。ラベルにある民族衣装を纏った女性は、Birgit Kraft (ビルギット　クラフト）という名前で、シャレを含んでいます。Birgit Kraft > Bier git Kraft (＝ドイツ語方言で、ビールは強さの意）。

The most successful product, a Pilsner style beer. Tannenzäpfle literally means "little fir cones" and is a reference to the shape of the bottle. The labels of the bottles are printed with likeness of "Birgit Kraft", a blonde girl in traditional dress for the region. Birgit's name is something of a pun, in the local dialect of Alemannic German, "Bier git Kraft", (Bier gibt Kraft) means "beer gives strength". The specific variety of fir cones named as Tannenzäpfle grow upwards from the branches instead of hanging from them in spite of their depiction on the bottle. This is commonly explained as a reference to the position of the bottle while it is being consumed.

Binding　Brauereiはドイツ最大のビール会社で傘下の醸造所も含めると、25万キロリットル/年生産しています。でも、この数字、アメリカの地ビール（クラフトビール）の定義が24万キロリットル/年（2011年までの基準ですが）ですので、実際の大手メジャーから比べると大きくないです。それだけ、ドイツのビール会社は全国区がなく、地域に根ざしており、ドイツ国内に約1,300社、5,000以上の銘柄があるので、そう考えると、”ドイツ最大”が理解できます。
ところで、このExportは本来、ビールの種類を示しますが、ドイツではどこでも醸造されるタイプで、今では単にプレミアムという意味になっています。どっしりしたしっかりした味のビールです。

Binding Brauerei, which also own DAB and Berlin Kindl Brauerei, produce in total 250,000 kl per a year. but is the figure actually big, because the one of definition of craft brewery in USA is that 240,000 kl per a year. Why so small? It is because there are approx. 1,300 breweries and no less than 5,000 brands in Germany. The figure, 250,000 kl is not so small there.
Export is a kind of beer but the kind of beers is produced in Germany here and there, therefore it means "Premium" now.

소맥 (So Mac) Korean style beer

소맥 (So Mac）は、소주（焼酎）と맥주（麦酒）を合体させた造語です。韓国ではビールに焼酎を混ぜて飲まれます。かつての韓国産ビールは味が薄かったようで、焼酎を混ぜて飲んだのが始まりとのこと。このグラスは大手酒造メーカー眞露が拡販グッズで飲食店に配布しているもの。焼酎と量でこの소맥全体のアルコール度数がわかるようにグラスに印字されています。

So Mac is a kind of cocktail which is very popular in Korea and mixed from Beer and Sho-Chu Korean traditional liquor. Korean beer was pale taste in the past, thus people started to make the cocktail for full-body taste. The attached images are promotion goods for restaurants, bars and Korean Pub and indication is printed so that the alcohol content can be known depends on the quantity of Sho-Chu.

ドイツ南部バイエルンにあるニュルンベルクのビールです。上面発酵タイプのヴァイツェンビール。Hefeとはドイツ語で酵母の意。酵母除去のろ過を施していませんので、濁った色のビールです。
ところで、ニュルンベルクといえば、小さなニュルンベルクソーセージが有名です。このビールとソーセージで何杯もいっちゃいます。

ドイツビールで私が一番好きなヤツです。上面発酵のアルトビールです。アルト（Alt）とはドイツ語で古いの意で、現在主流の下面発酵ビールが登場する前からあるタイプなので、この名前がついたデュッセルドルフを代表するビールタイプです。このディーベルはアルトビールを代表するビールです。

Diebels is the beer my most favorite German beer. Alt Beer is top-fermenting type from Duesseldorf. "Alt" means "Old" in German. The beer has been brewed before bottom-fermenting type becomes popular. Diebels of Duesseldorf is the market leader with its fruity, top-fermenting "old" beer.

October Fest. and German beers

約1,300の醸造所、5,000種以上のビールがあるドイツは誰も疑わないビール大国。かつては醸造所の煙突の陰が届く範囲内で、そのビールを飲むべしと言われました。
今、巷ではオクトーバーフェストで話題は持ちきり、日本国内でも各地でイベントが開催されています。
さて、そのオクトーバーフェスト。元々はビールのお祭りではありませんでした。1810年にバイエルン王国皇太子とヒルトブルクハウゼン王女の結婚を祝う祭典が、現在のオクトーバーフェストの会場で行われました。城壁の前の緑地では競馬が催され、依頼、バイエルン王宮は市民を喜ばせるため、翌年も同じ時期に競馬を開催すると発表、ここからオクトーバーフェストの伝統が始まりました。開催期間は9月中旬の土曜日真夜中に始まり、10月第一日曜日に終わります。
この祭りで提供されるジョッキは全て1Lジョッキ。そのジョッキを10杯も運ぶ女給さんたちはすごいパワーと思います。
それでは、ドイツのビールを始めます。
